Meet Kangan Institute's Teacher of the Year

On this World Teacher’s Day, we recognise, acknowledge and celebrate our teachers for all their hard work. Their resilience, commitment and passion to continue to teach and impart knowledge to students doesn’t go unnoticed.

Sean Bathman is one of the teachers we celebrate. He was recently recognised as Kangan Institute’s Teacher of the Year!

Although he now enjoys great success, Sean’s teaching journey hasn’t always been smooth-sailing.

Sean was first motivated to become a teacher when his Year 10 English teacher told him he would never amount to anything, and pigeon-holed Sean because he has ADHD. From then on, Sean vowed to become a teacher to stop other students from ever being treated like that.

Needing a change, Sean left school in Year 11 and went to Cricket Victoria’s Sports Development program. He achieved his Diploma of Sport, before pursuing a Teaching course at university.

Despite facing and overcoming many challenges and obstacles along the way, Sean finalised his studies in 2015. He completed his Bachelor’s Degree of Applied Science Physical Education and then did his Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching.

Sean secured a full-time teaching job at a secondary school, before realising his passion; he wanted to teach students life skills. It is through his desire to be involved in helping young people that he began his career at Kangan Institute.

Sean’s teaching career at Kangan began in 2017, and he has loved every minute of it. Currently a Lead Educator for our VCE Vocational Major course, his journey at the Institute has been so rewarding, knowing that he’s able to have a positive lasting effect on today’s youth.
